Becoming more like Jesus isn’t about working harder; it’s about making space for God to work in you. Spiritual formation in Christianity is the intentional process of being shaped by the Holy Spirit into the image of Christ.
Here are 5 practical tips for your journey:
- Prioritize Bible Reading over Study. While deep study is valuable, research shows that simply reading the Bible regularly is the habit most closely correlated with spiritual maturity. Use an Audio Bible or a simple plan to keep the Word flowing through your mind daily.
- Practice “Habit Stacking.” Integration is easier than starting from scratch. Pair a spiritual practice with an existing routine—for example, pray for others while you walk the dog or listen to a Scripture Podcast during your commute
- Embrace Silence and Solitude. In a noisy world, silence creates the “unhurried moments” needed to actually hear God. Try starting with just 5 minutes of quiet before your day begins, focusing on “beholding God beholding you”
- Find a “Soul Friend” or Mentor. Spiritual maturity is often “caught” as much as it is “taught”. Seek out a Spiritual Director or a mature mentor who can offer an outside perspective on your walk with God
- Commit to a Local Church Community. Formation is not a solo sport. Regular fellowship provides the accountability and “iron sharpens iron” environment necessary for long-term growth.
