How Transformation Occurs in God’s Presence

Transformation in God’s presence is described as a supernatural process where an individual is gradually conformed to the image of Christ. Rather than being a result of human willpower, it is viewed as a metabolic change of the heart and mind initiated by the Holy Spirit.

Key Mechanics of Transformation:

  • Beholding and Reflecting: Based on 2 Corinthians 3:18, transformation occurs as believers “behold” God’s glory with an unveiled face. This “beholding”—done through prayer, worship, and Scripture—naturally imprints God’s character onto the soul, much like a person sitting by a fire begins to smell like smoke.
  • Renewing of the Mind: Transformation involves a radical reorientation of thoughts and values. By saturating the mind with Scripture, believers replace worldly patterns with God’s truth, leading to a changed “inner world” that eventually dictates outward behavior.
  • The Role of Surrender: While God does the “transforming,” the individual’s role is to stay in His presence. This requires surrendering personal will, acknowledging weaknesses, and “dying to self” so the Holy Spirit can work unhindered.
  • Abiding and Consistency: Lasting change is rarely instantaneous; it is a progressive, lifelong journey often referred to as “sanctification”. Regular spiritual disciplines like silence and stillness create a fertile environment for this gradual growth.

Immediate vs. Progressive Effects:

  • Identity Shifts: An encounter can immediately shift a person’s identity and sense of purpose, as seen in the conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus.
  • Character Development: Over time, being in God’s presence produces the “Fruit of the Spirit,” such as increased patience, love, and self-control.
  • Emotional Healing: God’s presence can reveal and heal deep-seated wounds, trauma, and lies that an individual believes about themselves.
